Sovereign Grand Lodge of Portugal

The Sovereign is a new and modern way of living Regular Freemasonry, prepared for the challenges of the 21st century, anchored in history but focused on how universal Masonic values can give meaning to the philosophical questions of our time. It works the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, the Rectified Scottish Rite and the Portuguese Rite, which is its official rite. It has Lodges throughout the country and forms Masons who do not forget their oath to become better men. In the Sovereign, disciples are not created — Masters are formed. It is Freemasonry as a “gymnasium of the soul”.

The Sovereign Grand Lodge of Portugal was consecrated on 15 September 2018 at the Palácio de Seteais. It is the new Portuguese Regular Freemasonry and received a Charter issued by three Regular Lodges (legitimacy of origin). It is today one of the most active Masonic bodies in the country, with charitable and cultural work, conferences, Masonic visits, three podcasts (5º Império, Assunto Sério and Expresso para o Oriente), the magazine “Origens” and a strong interaction with civil society, keeping its focus on the spirituality and mysticism of the soul of Portugal.

Yes. It is. Following on from the above, it is essential to understand that Regularity is a fact, not a matter of opinion. Either one is Regular, or one is not. This condition does not depend on sympathies, conveniences or private or political readings, but on strict observance of the Landmarks of Freemasonry. These unchanging principles are the basis on which the legitimacy of a Masonic Power or of a Mason is recognised. To depart from them is to lose Regularity — and that is an objective, non-negotiable reality.

Yes. It is. Recognition between Obediences rests, in essence, on recognition between Masons. If a Brother is recognised as such, he deserves the fraternal treatment that this bond implies. A Mason should therefore challenge himself to avoid hasty value judgements and always seek the wisdom of the Brethren before reaching conclusions.

Recognition has a practical purpose: to allow intervisitation between Brethren of different Obediences. Nothing more. It is not a seal of authentication nor a guarantee of quality — it is simply an agreement of reciprocity that makes fellowship and joint work within the Royal Art easier.

No. The High Degrees of the Portuguese Rite and the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Portugal are two distinct entities, though complementary in their mission. Examples of this are the Farol Invisível project and a set of unprecedented cultural initiatives beginning in September — such as exhibitions devoted to the Soul of Portugal, the opening of an art gallery and the creation of a conference room open to the public. All these actions, promoted by the High Degrees of the Portuguese Rite, have the institutional support of the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Portugal, reflecting the convergence of initiatic tradition and cultural service to the community.

Yes. The Sovereign has two Temples devoted to its symbolic Lodges and a Temple of its own for the High Degrees, ensuring that each Masonic body has a space suited to its ritual practice and to the preservation of its identity.

Besides these sacred spaces, part of its premises was designed to interact with civil society, housing an Art Gallery, a Conference Room, a Lounge Area, an Events Room, a Room for assisting those most in need, and even a studio for recording videocasts. The sacred is thus joined to the profane, Tradition to modernity, Freemasonry to the world. This work was not about building walls — it was about building a WORK.

Yes. The Masonic purpose is to promote an active and enlightened Solidarity and to encourage the spiritual and cultural deepening of each Brother and of society. Creative Solidarity and Culture stand as two fundamental pillars of Masonic work: the first expresses the duty to act for one's neighbour with intelligence and compassion; the second feeds mind and spirit, ensuring that the Light expands consciously and transformingly.

Since 2018 the SOVEREIGN has assisted thousands of homeless people through the Sem Abraço programme, carried out charitable actions for children and the elderly, supported Social Solidarity institutions and Child Emergency services, given aid in disasters such as the earthquake in Türkiye and the floods in Rio Grande do Sul, and sent humanitarian aid to Venezuelan children. To these are added countless study visits, conferences, lectures and courses — including the 1st Postgraduate Programme in Freemasonry and Initiatic Societies at the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa —, open houses, performances, art exhibitions and the recent charitable initiative, unprecedented in Portuguese Freemasonry: Farol Invisível, a permanent and free community assistance centre, raised with the most precious gift a Mason can offer: his time.

The areas of support already identified include: rights and citizenship, free legal advice, access to social benefits, awareness of human and civil rights, accounting support, tackling digital illiteracy, optical care, dental care (Sorrisos Justos & Perfeitos), social follow-up, neighbourhood solidarity networks, home support for the elderly, support for the homeless (the Sem Abraço project), digital inclusion, mental coaching, employment placement, adult literacy, technical courses, vocational training, financial education and citizenship. All of this is overseen by a Scientific Council that ensures rigorous and fair criteria for access to the services.

The Sovereign awarded its Honorific Order BANDARRA to the celebrated French philosopher EDGAR MORIN, the father of Complexity Theory.

Yes. You can also see which visits are scheduled and register for them. The visits are organised by the Bento Espinosa Research Lodge and coordinated by the Grand Preceptor, Professor Fernando Casqueira.

In Masonic practice, symbols are keys of Light: they open doors to deep understanding, join the visible to the invisible, and allow each Brother to discover, in the silence of his own interpretation, truths that go beyond words.

The training of the workmen of the Portuguese Rite is conducted directly by their Wardens and, quarterly, by the Inspector of the Rite and the respective College of Instructors. This formative process follows Masonic, ritual, spiritual and metaphysical dynamics, ensuring that learning is not limited to ritual technique but also deepens inner experience and the sacred sense of the Rite, preserving its authenticity and elevation.

Yes. There are three Masonic podcasts:

• 5º Império — Under the responsibility of the High Degrees of the Portuguese Rite, presented by João Pestana Dias, a space where the Fifth Empire shows itself.

• Assunto Sério — Under the responsibility of the Sovereign Grand Lodge of Portugal, presented by the journalist and writer Fernando Correia. It is the first and oldest Portuguese Masonic podcast, listened to in more than 52 countries.

• Expresso para o Oriente — A profane space presented by the journalist José Gabriel Quaresma, in which only women are interviewed, in a spiritual key.
